Response to Invitation by the Artist Lee Ming - Sheng for the work entitled "More Than A Sketch And An Image"

Title of Response: " Let I = The Avatar M. River (AKA More Than a Construct And A Body)"
Question Three : Describe the place where you were grew up

Here are some places that I have learned things. Here are some locations that have created me . Here are some images of the way things use to be when I was becoming what I am now.

1. The setting of Space Invaders was a planet's surface looking up to an open sky. The space, reading it from top to bottom, was as follows: score, flight zone for UFO, descending rows of marching aliens, you as a weapon (sort of a Donald Judd gun) and finally a set of "homes" to protect.

2. The room was black. The walls were black. The carpet was black. The ceiling was black. The people in the room, myself included, wore mostly black. The room was filled with flickering lights. This light came from several strobes, a few candles on tables and one big Disco ball. I could sit in this room for hours watching bodies of strangers dance across the light. I found it beautiful in a way that nature was not.

3. I would describe the back seat of a 1976 Ford Mustang in detail but it is a bit cliche...

4. I would like to say that the architecture of a gymnasium for an American high school (circa 1986) is one of the world's saddest mistakes.

5. Please read George Orwell's 1984. Winston's golden space filled my young mind with awe.

6. Do you remember the first time you saw the ocean? Have you seen a ocean on a hot summer day? Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful...

7. Every once in awhile, a gas station on a highway at 3:00 am, when you are with friends has the same beauty as the ocean. Unfortunately, this beauty can only be seen by the young.

8. Part of me grew up on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise under the watch of Capt. Kirck and Mr. Spock. (Please note my life long love of oddball 70's minimalism.) Blinking lights on computers that can tell you anything in a quasi Buckminter Fuller / Eames room... I still think that is what Utopia looks like.

9. Is music a location? Put me down for loud, very loud, sad, very sad, angry, full of love, very full of love, analog and electronic.

10. Okay, one more place I grew up in. Have you ever been to Brooklyn on a hot summer night?
